B.Sc. Chemistry

Programme Overview

The B.Sc. Chemistry programme at Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education is designed for students who are passionate about understanding the building blocks of matter and shaping the future through science, innovation, and real-world problem-solving.
Chemistry is often called the central science—connecting physics, biology, environmental sciences, medicine, agriculture, and engineering. Our programme equips students with both theoretical mastery and hands-on laboratory experience to thrive in modern scientific industries.

At Alvan Ikoku FUE, we blend academic excellence with practical exposure, encouraging students to experiment, discover, and apply chemistry to real-life challenges. Whether your dreams lie in research, pharmaceuticals, energy, education, or industrial chemistry, this programme provides the ideal foundation for a successful scientific career.

Course Structure

Our B.Sc. Chemistry programme is built on a strong academic and practical framework. Students progress through a structured curriculum that includes:

Year 1 – Foundational Sciences

Students are introduced to the basics of chemistry and sciences, including:

  • General Chemistry I & II

  • Experimental Chemistry

  • Mathematics for Scientists

  • Introductory Physics

  • Use of English & Communication Skills

These courses prepare students for advanced chemical principles.

Year 2 – Core Chemistry Principles

Students begin deeper scientific exploration:

  • Organic Chemistry I

  • Physical Chemistry I

  • Inorganic Chemistry I

  • Analytical Chemistry I

  • Computer Applications in Science

  • Elementary Statistics

Laboratory sessions strengthen their practical competence.

Year 3 – Advanced Chemical Techniques

This level builds expertise through complex theories and applications:

  • Organic Chemistry II

  • Physical Chemistry II

  • Inorganic Chemistry II

  • Analytical Chemistry II

  • Environmental Chemistry

  • Instrumental Methods of Analysis

  • Entrepreneurship Studies

Students also undertake industrial training (SIWES) to gain real-world laboratory experience.

Year 4 – Specialization & Research

Final-year students synthesize everything learned into practical and research activities:

  • Advanced Organic & Physical Chemistry

  • Coordination Chemistry

  • Industrial Chemistry

  • Polymer Chemistry

  • Environmental & Green Chemistry

  • Research Project (Thesis)

Students complete an original research project under expert supervision and present findings at the departmental seminar.
