Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE), Owerri, took a significant step in its institutional evolution on Thursday, 19th February, 2026, formally admitting 2,121 freshmen during its second matriculation ceremony.The colourful and historic event, held at the University Pavilion, saw 2,066 Bachelor’s degree students and 55 Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) candidates take the matriculation oath, marking their formal entry into the academic community.In her matriculation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stella Ngozi Lemchi, revealed that students now have access to 45 degree programmes across six faculties. This expansion having been achieved immediately following her appointment last July.“Success is not a miracle; it is a daily habit,” Prof. Lemchi told the matriculants. “You build it by attending every lecture and by studying in the library long before an exam arrives.”The Vice-Chancellor was quick to draw a line on discipline, warning that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward social vices. She specifically highlighted the "darkness of cultism," drug abuse, and cyber fraud as hollow promises that lead only to ruin. On academic integrity, she was unequivocal: "Examination malpractice is a complete 'No, No.' If you are caught, you will be expelled.”Highlighting recent infrastructural gains, the VC noted that the university had just completed its most significant hostel upgrade in over 15 years. This, she explained, was achieved through the judicious use of TETFund interventionist funds, ensuring that students now have access to modern and comfortable accommodations.Staff welfare also took centre stage, as Prof. Lemchi announced that AIFUE is among the first universities to implement the payment of the recently approved Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA). She credited the Visitor to the University, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the approval, while thanking the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for his role in the swift release of funds, which she said has significantly boosted staff morale and service delivery.The ceremony also served as a platform to celebrate student excellence. The Vice-Chancellor lauded Ebubenna Clinton Amaefula of the English Department, who recently secured the second prize in the "Imo at 50" Quiz Competition, walking away with a ₦10 million prize from Governor Hope Uzodimma. Prof Lemchi drew parallels with Amaefula’s performance and the quality of education on offer in Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education. Speaking on the relationship between the University and the host State, Lemchi commended Governor Uzodimma's support for the University, citing his “advice and fatherly guidance”.The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the matriculation register, as staff and students, parents and guardians cheered on the newly inducted Alvanites.Favour Amaezefule, a Mathematics student, expressed her delight at the ceremony, noting she was motivated by Ebubenna Clinton Amaefula’s success. "It means that with hard work, one can find good fortune," she remarked.Similarly, Chiemerie Emmanuel Ogbonna of the Department of Special Needs Education said he was overjoyed to gain admission into Alvan. He added that what touched him most was the VC's charge and admonition to be honest, respectful, obedient and to keep away from exam malpractice and cultism.
