Brief History
The school of General Studies was established on 20th June, 2012 at the 350th meeting of the academic board of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri. The establishment of the School of General Studies was a follow up of the Department of General Studies established by the academic board of the institution on 5th January 2012 which was headed by Dr. MBO Ajileye. Following the establishment of the school of General Studies, five academic departments were established, These departments are: Department of Basic Sciences, Department of Civil and Basic Issues in Education, Department of Entrepreneurship Education, Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Department of Languages and Humanities.
Department of Basic Science
The Department of Basic Science was then headed by Dr Ikechukwu Egbo in 2012/2013 academic session. He was succeeded by Dr David O. Mbah who headed the Department in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 academic sessions. Dr. Abel Idoko Onoja became the head of Department in 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions while Dr Victor N. Nwugha headed the Department in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic sessions. The head of the department in
2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic session is Dr Paschal Offor. Dr Paschal Offor handed over to Dr Abel Idoko Onoja who is now the current Head of the Department in the ongoing 2021/2022 academic session.
Vision of the Department
The Department of Basic Science is established to be a model department in a modern Federal College of Education that is a centre for excellence in the Basic Sciences and whose graduates will be well adjusted and functional with broad – based knowledge that will make them relevant in a modern world.
Mission of the Department
The mission of department of Basic Sciences is to promote the development of the total person through basic scientific knowledge acquisition, teaching, training and research for a positive change in the society.
Core Mandate of the Department
The core mandate of the department is to inculcate basic scientific knowledge in the general sciences, mathematics and sport orientation in learner through teaching, training and research.

Unique Facilities in the Department: The department is a servicing department and use facilities in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Integrated Science laboratories for instruction. Sports facilities are also available to the department for training of students in sports orientation.
