Vice-Chancellor Commissions Econometrics Laboratory, Commits to its Growth
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stella Ngozi Lemchi, has commissioned an Econometrics Laboratory in the University's Department of Economics. The event, which took place in the Econometrics Laboratory located at the Shell Camp Campus, had the full complement of the University Management in attendance. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated Management for accompanying her to the significant event even on short notice, and thanked the Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Prof. C.N. Ebomuche, along with staff and students of the Economics Department for their support to her administration.
Prof. Lemchi expressed delight that the laboratory, which she had played a major role in initiating during her tenure as Deputy Provost in the College dispensation, had finally come to fruition. She expressed hope that the centre would boost the University's visibility and standing. She donated a 1.5 horsepower air conditioner to complement the existing unit in the lab and announced that TetFund had approved a high-capacity generator for the laboratory. She also guaranteed a future physical expansion of the facility.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the Head of the Economics Department, Dr. Chinedu Nwosu, for his role in achieving this feat, urging other staff in positions of responsibility to emulate his example. She also called on staff to shun vice and join Management's efforts to advance the University.
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. M.B.O. Ajileye, described the Vice-Chancellor as trailblazing and development-focused for her role in establishing and equipping the laboratory. He commended the Head of Department for making the impact of his position visible and assured him of Management's continued support.
The Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Prof. C.N. Ebomuche, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for her infrastructural, spiritual, and moral transformation of the University, noting that her commissioning of a project she herself initiated reflected the maxim "You reap where you sow."
In his welcome address, the Head of the Department of Economics, Dr. Chinedu Nwosu, described the day as one of taking control rather than mere commissioning. He praised the Vice-Chancellor and expressed his commitment to help in building a world-class university. He noted that the Economics Department had set the pace for others to follow and described econometrics as the live wire of the social sciences. He explained that the laboratory would serve as a training centre for staff and students, as well as a destination for external researchers, and predicted it would boost undergraduate enrollment. He pledged to keep the facility functional throughout his tenure.
The Econometrics Laboratory is equipped with more than 20 computers, a projector, a mini-speaker, and interior CCTV coverage. Dr. Nwosu noted plans to install solar electricity and exterior CCTV, citing rising concerns over the activities of criminals, and expressed confidence that Management would continue to meet the Department's needs.
