CELEBRATING PROF. STELLA NGOZI LEMCHI’S FIRST YEAR AS PIONEER VC OF AIFUE

July 22, 2026, marks exactly one year in office for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stella Ngozi Lemchi, as the pioneer substantive Vice-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE), Owerri. Professor Lemchi, whose robust engagement was pivotal in the upgrading of the erstwhile College of Education, served as the institution's 13th and final Provost before her historic appointment as Vice-Chancellor.

For the second-oldest tertiary institution in the South-East of Nigeria, the past twelve months have illustrated that remarkable progress can always be achieved when good people put their minds to a task. Prof. Stella Lemchi’s emergence as Vice-Chancellor has heralded a vibrant period of academic expansion, intense restructuring, and a strategic push towards placing AIFUE within the league of world-class universities in the country.

Prof. Lemchi’s leadership style has been characterized by speed, integrity, and a manifest zeal to lay strong foundations for an institution which may be over sixty years old as a College but is less than three years old as a full-fledged Federal University.

On her resumption of office, the Vice-Chancellor quickly ensured that staff members were promptly paid their due salaries as university staff. This singular, decisive action helped bring peace, harmony, and mutual trust back to the university community, which had previously been boiling over regarding wrong staff deductions and paycheck irregularities. She has also continued to ensure that on issues of staff welfare and emoluments, Alvan is one of the first universities in the country.

Commenting recently on the university’s WhatsApp platform, a jubilant staff member, Comrade Onyi Nwosu, effused, “‎It is one thing to have a Vice-Chancellor or Provost, but it is another to have one with the passion, commitment, and determination to ensure that staff receive what is due to them and that their welfare is genuinely prioritized.”

A few weeks into her substantive tenure, Prof. Lemchi secured approval of an additional 20 undergraduate programmes. This, added to the original 25 programmes earlier approved for the university's take-off by the National Universities Commission (NUC), following the resource inspection in 2024, increased the University’s academic programmes.

Ahead of the commencement of admissions for the 2026/2027 Academic Session, Prof. Lemchi’s doggedness and vision helped the University secure approvals for yet additional 11 programmes, successfully bringing the total approvals from the NUC to 56 programmes. This latest batch was critical, paving the way for the University to begin programmes like Public Health, Entrepreneurship Education, Public Administration, Marketing, Language and Communication Arts, amongst others.

As Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lemchi had initiated the delicate work of building the university's academic framework. Following her substantive appointment, the Vice-Chancellor doubled efforts to ensure that the Bills for an Act to establish the University scaled through the National Assembly. Currently, the Harmonized Bill has been adopted by the Senate. As soon as the House adopts it, it will be sent to the President for assent.

Under her supervision, AIFUE has also developed its comprehensive Academic Brief. This vital document crystallizes the institution’s mission, academic programmes, and long-term strategic development, meticulously designed to position the University as a premier national Centre of Excellence.

Speaking on the work that went into the Academic Brief, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Michael Olugbenga Ajileye, said, "The preparation of the Academic Brief became a consuming passion for the Vice-Chancellor. She led the work and drove the process with unrelenting vigor and determined focus. Those of us involved with her in the assignment had no choice but to run at her pace. She mobilized the team and commenced the process immediately after the upgrade to University status and her appointment then as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) by the Federal Government. This and other mounting successes recorded thus far by the Lemchi administration are evidence of a leader well prepared for and committed to focused leadership."

Known for her penchant for a clean, conducive, and beautiful learning environment, the Vice-Chancellor has overseen the comprehensive reconstruction of five student hostels, backed by funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in the last year. This development delivered the biggest upgrade to the hostel facilities in over 15 years.

Recounting the development in February, while delivering her Matriculation address at the University’s second Matriculation ceremony, Prof. Lemchi said: “The renovation included complete overhauling of the toilet facilities and plumbing, titling of the rooms, changing of the windows to modern Aluminum ones, complete rewiring of the electrical works, plastering, rebuilding broken-down sections and painting. We also upgraded the kitchens and laundry rooms, changed the beds – most of which had been in use for decades- and provided new beddings for all the hostel occupants.”

In addition to student housing, a befitting and imposing entrance gate has been constructed in her wake, even as she restarted key suspended infrastructural works around the campus, most notably the imposing Professors' Office Block in Shell Camp.

Professor Lemchi’s most profound achievement in the last year, however, has been her focus on enculturating a true "university ethos," professional conduct, and analytical thinking among the workforce. To achieve this, training and development opportunities have been aggressively ramped up. While TETFund training allocations have been judiciously deployed, the Lemchi administration has also funded professional development workshops, including training on "Developing a Proper University Culture," and specialized workshops for academic advisors and faculty officers. Many staff in critical positions have been funded for workshops and seminars across the country.

Speaking on the impact of Prof.  Lemchi's first year at the helm, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Chinenye Udeze, said, “Her vision, dedication, and people-centered approach have brought renewed hope, progress, and stability to the institution. Her successful efforts, which have been marked with bold decisions, a listening ear and actions, particularly in staff welfare, infrastructural development, and academic excellence, reflect a leader who leads with wisdom, compassion, and integrity. Her leadership in Alvan has restored confidence and peace in the University. We are proud to work under her leadership and look forward to greater strides ahead.”
