BRIEF  HISTORY OF FACULTY OF SOCIAL AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (FOSAMS)

 

The Faculty of Social and Management Sciences,  Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria  started as School of Social Sciences in 1973 under the auspice of Advanced Teachers Training College and later Alvan Ikoku Federal  College of  Education, Owerri, Imo State.  It later metamorphosed into School of Arts and Social Sciences in the year 2015.  With the transition to University status, the nomenclature then changed to Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Alvan  Ikoku Federal University of Education,  Owerri, Imo State.
The Faculty encompasses five (5) Departments with their Departmental Heads:

Our noble Faculty has unique qualities as the economic hub and the conscience of our University.  It is also the largest Faculty in the University in terms of students’ enrolment figure and enjoys great respect from different spectra of the Alvan Community. 
The mission and vision statements of this great Faculty among others are geared towards producing a self-reliant and balanced personality for educational and national development.  Our great Faculty also strives to promote social sciences’ education for sustainable development in Nigeria by equipping students with quality teaching as well as career training and research.
 The Faculty made history last year 2023 by electing the first female Dean after sixty (60) years the Institution was established - Dr. Ezinne Okoroafor. In all, since the inception of the institution, the Faculty has produced fourteen  (14) Deans, (13 males and 1 female).

STATUTORY FUNCTIONS / DUTIES OF THE FACULTY (DEANS OFFICE)

  • The Dean’s office is under the leadership of the Dean, Faculty of  Social  and Management Sciences. The Dean supervises teaching and learning activities across five Departments namely Economics, Geography, Political Science, Social Studies  and Civic Education. The Dean ensures that policies of Management of the Institution are implemented to the fullest.
  • The Dean also ensures that the welfare of staff and students are given utmost attention. She works in tandem with Management of the University and the Security Outfit to ensure that lives and property within her jurisdiction are adequately secured and protected.
  • The Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences {FOSAMS} promotes and enhances the actualization of crop of graduates and undergraduates who have balanced  personality in terms of character and learning and ensures sustainable educational and national development
  • The Dean as part of her status,  promotes continuous professional development of faculty members and mentoring Faculty in research, publication, and career advancement.
  • The Dean ensures student support services, including academic advising, counseling, and extracurricular activities and addresses student concerns and fosters a positive learning environment.
  • She builds partnerships with external stakeholders, including industry, government, and other academic institutions, representing  the faculty in university governance and external functions.
  • Prepares and manages the faculty’s budget, allocating resources for academic programs, research, and infrastructure. Ensures the efficient use of funds in alignment with the faculty's academic goals. Deals with disciplinary matters involving staff and students, in accordance with university statutes.


DURATION: The duration of an elected Dean, lasts for two (2years). The Dean supervises the overall activities of Teaching and Non-teaching staff as well as students across the five (5) Departments.

To promote the enhancement of well rounded, self-reliant, positive self image and balanced personality for  educational and National development.

To produce teachers of Social and Management Sciences  through qualitative and quantitative teaching, training and research for positive development in the society.
