HISTORY OF FACULTY OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (FVTE)

OWERRI, IMO STATE, NIGERIA.

The Faculty of Vocational and Technology Education, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State is one of the Schools in the old Advanced Teachers Training College, (ATTC) Owerri in the then Eastern Nigeria which was established in May, 1963. During the period of its existence, the School has gone through evolutions that witnessed mergers and demergers as reflected in the changing of its name. It should be noted that as soon as the first provost of the college - Prof. B. O. Ukeje was appointed in 1974 and was given mandate among others of producing Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) graduates in Business Education - Secretarial and Accounting options, which was initially run as single majors. Now, taken with other combinations like Accountancy/Economics, Accountancy/Commerce, Secretarial studies/Economics, Secretarial studies/Commerce etc. Mr. C.C. Oguledo was appointed Head of Business Education (Secretarial and accounting options) in 1975. And Dr. Agom Eze was Head of Economics then.

Thus, as at that year 1975, Department of Business and Department of Economics constituted the School of Business and Vocational Education (SBVE). Dr. Agom Eze Head of Economics then became Dean School of Business and Vocational Education (SBVE) in 1980, who served two years term three times which ended in 1986. The school got named 'School of Agriculture and Vocational Studies (SAVS). The same year1986, Mrs. M. Ogumka became the Dean of SAVS (1986-1989). Dr. Alf. Igwe was made the Acting Dean of the school of Agriculture and Vocational Studies (SAVS), between 1990-1991. On creation of Abia State in 1991, the Department of Agriculture, Alvan Ikoku College of Education (AICE), Umuahia Campus relocated to the main Campus in Owerri. This was followed by the new name School of Agriculture and Vocational studies (SAVS) as it was called then. The Head of Umuahia Campus, Dr. J.C Nwigwe of blessed memory, was appointed as the Dean (SAVS), 1991-1996. The nomenclature changed from School of Agriculture and Vocational studies (SAVS) to School of Vocational and Technical Education (SVTE) in the year 2011 through due process.

Albeit, summative impression of the University at large is that in the year 2023, the former Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE) was upgraded to Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE) which this Faculty of Vocational and Technology Education is one of the Faculties in the University.
