Brief History Research and Development
The Directorate of Research and Development Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri was established on March 20th, 2017, when the institution was a Federal College of Education Owerri by the Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ijeoma. The Directorate was established to nurture research culture in the university by promoting research in emerging and challenging areas of education and beyond. It’s also strategic in the area of capacity-building activities designed to facilitate individual/team research, central research administration, attracting research funds and grants, creating relationships, and developing and implementing strategies that increase individual competitiveness and effectiveness in teaching and entrepreneurship skills.
- Statutory functions and duties
The Directorate of Research and Development is saddled with the responsibility to:
- Collaborate with both local and foreign institutions and organization in training and capacity building of staff in areas of Research and human Development.
- Develop standard template for accessing of grants to enhance research activities in the University and beyond.
- Build a strong research initiative in the minds of staff towards improvement of teacher education.
- Make the institution a Research Centre comparable with other institutions and organizations.
- Develop and provide a conducive research atmosphere in terms of technology and information to staff of the institution.
- Provide autonomy to the principal investigators as per the guidelines provided by the funding authorities.
- Enhance the institutional local and international visibility through research activities and publications.
- Obtain and disseminate research information from funding agencies to staff.
- Conduct/participate in workshops, training programs and sensitization programs on capacity building in terms of research and consultancy and imbibing research culture among staff.
- Preserve the code of ethics of the University while publishing.
- Help the staff in applying for funds in the form of sponsored research/grants from Government and Non-Government agencies.
- Progress recorded in the past five years.
- Workshop on innovation in education by AIFCE and upquest inc. (August, 2017)
- Workshop on professional staff development (methodology and content) by AIFCEW and Edvigor (August, 2019)
- Workshop on Research writing and project supervision and staff development for newly employed staff academic staff (May, 2023).
- Creation/Inauguration of College Research Team
- Creation/Inauguration of School Research Team.
- Sensitization of the school research team on research writings and research grants and human development.
- Invitation to TETFAIR Training 2023.
- Projections for the future of the directorate of research and development includes but not limited to:
- Help staff and researchers to know research methodology.
- Train staff and researchers on methodology to develop projects.
- Bring the process of converting projects into prototype and in turn into products.
- Conduct skill development courses that enhance the capability of staff and researchers.
